RUVEN AFANADOR written by Dixie Rosa Fernandez

Ruven Afanador was born in a small town in Bogota, Colombia. His brilliant humor, art direction, wardrobe, makeup, hair and friendly aliens lend themselves to semblances of his obsession of Irvin Penn and beauty pageants while growing up. In the fall of 2001  he published his first book , Torero, a book of  homoerotic images of young bullfighters raised in old-world Latin traditions with its couture-like opulent costumes and matador culture rituals. EUGENIO RECUENCO

I must oblige with the fact that I do not believe there is nothing Spanish photographer Eugenio Recuenco can’t do. His creative arc from classic-elegant portraiture to hot fashionista fashion campaigns to essay-like themes of the  macabre and sci-fi futuristic space odysseys. Being a devout addict of science fiction denomination, ’til death do me part. And having being exposed to television phenomena such as Doctor Who, Lost in Space, Star Trek, My Favorite Martian, The Twilight Zone, The Outer Limits, Babylon 5, and  The X-Files. I savor the idiosyncratic perfection of this Spaniard’s opinion, which he craft-fully conveys uncompromisingly in his conceptual dream-like, fantasy, sci-fi eye for the eccentric.  It is cinematographic, editorial, pictorial, it can be an ad for diamonds and I profess my ongoing infatuation with fashion photographers who have the innate ability to morph advertising concepts with high  fashion. There is a narrative from beginning to end, and it always leaves you yearning for more. Then there is also the music you could adhere to the imagery, Brian Eno, Ziggy Stardust, Gary Numan, Dead Can Dance, M83, Siguros, and more. Every tale has a theme song. And I can’t help but wonder, what Eugenio’s song was for this series. What happens to these creatures caught up in their own immaculate time capsules of diamond riches in ambiguous time travel? Are they forgotten forevermore to wallow in their own tears? Dixie

Miles knows how to advertise fashion without indicating, in his treatment of the world he creates surrounding the brand. His models are dead pan, expressionless creatures who seem other worldly.  There’s almost a David Lynch-esque quality in how he uses colors in some monotonous, symbolic way of being.  But the ambiguity in these surreal images disarms conventional advertising and instead interjects with a story of its own. You really don’t know where he’s taking you and your eyes are prisoners to his schtick. His conceptual photography inadvertently hypnotizes you. Dixie
