DAVID LACHAPELLE written by Dixie Rosa Fernandez

LaChapelle’s shooting range of people he is able to empathise with has been misunderstood, in how he has shot the most beautiful making them more beautiful and how is that imaginative in projecting  subjectively into his subjects. How much does it mean for us to see Paris Hilton looking richer, more powerful, the most sensual? Blah.. Do we really care to see her blown up that much. But if you get him you’ll grasp that he is simply playing with the boundaries of a hyper reality within a reality, much like escapism. When he shoots celebrities he projects an “escaping reality” in creating a new one because he knows he may be dealing with people who are obsessed with materialism, wanting to buy and own everything and no sufficient amount of real estate could ever fill whatever void. That is where his take on an ironic surrealism relishes in his boldly colored-flamboyant photography, in which he has channeled his manic bipolar disorder quite intuitively. I think being bipolar  is to Mr. LaChapelle’s advantage. He is his own connoisseur of conceptual fashion, advertising and fine art. Dixie
